Scoping Dialogue on the Women's Exclusion and Inclusion in the Forest Sector, Kathmandu, Nepal

Friday, September 21, 2012 - 9:00pm to Sunday, September 23, 2012 - 9:00pm

(Asia/Kathmandu)

WOCAN is organizing the scoping dialogue in partnership with The Forest Dialogue on Women's Exclusion and Inclusion in Forest Sector in Kathmandu, Nepal  on September 22-24, 2012.

Gender inequalities are increasingly viewed as a weak link in the effective design and implementation of interventions aimed to reduce negative impacts of human activities on forests and people. Nonetheless, women are often excluded from decision making involving management of forests, even where they are the primary users of forest services and products. The objective of the scoping dialogue is to better understand the constraints and perceived advantages of including women in the governance of natural resource management. The topic will be explored through the viewpoints of varied stakeholder groups including community groups, forest user groups, indigenous peoples, forest-related companies, development agencies, government bodies and international agencies.

The current proposal to the advisory group is that dialogue will consist of a one-day field visit to Chitwan Women's Group, an all-women Community Forestry Group in Shaktikhor, and a day and half meeting session in Kathmandu. The field site is also a pilot project area for the "Forest Carbon Trust Fund Project" supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and implemented by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), The Federation of Community Forestry Users, Nepal (FECOFUN), and the Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB).
