4th WLCAN Meeting in South Africa

November 30, 2013

On 26 Nov, fourth Women's Leadership Circle in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management (WLCAN) meeting was organized in Pretoria, South Africa. At the last WLCAN meeting, the farmers chose to be addressed by an official from the Tshwane Municipality to explain how farmers can get access to funds promised by the municipality.  The Municipality has reserved 25% (R2 Billion) of its annual budget to cooperatives and farmers. Women farmers seek details from the relevant officials.  The official, an Executive Director from the Finance department addressed the farmers on how they can access the funds, but addressed that in the next WLCAN meeting, he would make a follow up presentation where he will bring representatives from the Cooperatives Section of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the City’s Department of Agriculture and Waste Management, so that a strong package could be worked out for, and with the farmers. He wanted to be sure that if his department makes finance available, other departments will provide the necessary support such as extension services from agriculture and waste management, and business management support from the DTI. The women also spoke and asked many pertinent questions on the use of the funds for farm inputs, fencing of their farms, tractor hire and other farm activities . WOCAN’s efforts were very much appreciated on linking farmers to the policy makers and visa versa. The next meeting involving other departments will take place in early February.
