First Ever UNFCCC COP19 Gender Workshop

On Nov 12, about200 participants attended the UNFCCC Gender Workshop on Nov 12 during the COP19 in Warsaw, Poland.As mandated by the COP18 Gender Decision, the UNFCCC Secretariat convened the first in-session workshop focused on gender balance and gender equality. The COP19 Gender Workshop was an opportunity for Parties to share national experiences and consider concrete steps with regard to greater gender equality and gender balance.

Ms. Dessima Williams, Gender and Climate Change Consultant, opened the workshop emphatic of the value of the COP18 Gender Decision: gendered outcomes of policy decisions for solutions accommodate both men and women in their differentiated roles in society.Ms. Nathalie Eddy, GGCA Coordinator, gave an overview of COP19 submissions from Parties and Observers drawn from collaborative document shared from the Collective Working Group on the COP18 Gender Decision summarizing it into 8 key elements.

Part I of the workshop focused on possible pathways and action for achieving the goal of gender balance in the UNFCCC process.

Part II of the workshop focused on Capacity-building activities to promote greater participation in the UNFCCC process.

Part III of the workshop focused on Gender-sensitive climate policy
