September 29, 2015

Meena Bilgi, WOCAN Core Associate, attended the Feminist Forum and United Nations Sustainable Development Summit from 21st to 28th September, 2015 in New York, USA. The Women’s Major Group hosted the Feminist Forum on September 24, the day before the Post-2015 Summit. Feminists and women’s rights activists came together to discuss, debate, motivate and inspire each other with ideas about next steps. During the Forum Meena emphasized that the goals and indicators have the potential to be transformational for women famers but it is critical for women advocates to continue to hold their government accountable for the commitments they have made. Meena has been involved with national and regional level expert consultation for the development of the Sustainable Development Global Goals as a WOCAN representative for the Women Major Group (WMG).

Meena also attended the International Women’s Health Coalition’s post 2015 celebrations which focused on what the new development agenda means for women and girls.  The speakers from UNFPA, UN Women talked about the 2030 agenda acknowledging the gender equality and human rights as essential to and underpin global development. Taken together – the SDGs will make significant impact on the lives of women and girls who bear the brunt of social, economic and environmental crises. She also attended the opening session of the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit.
