“This book includes reviews of the literature, case studies, and cross-country comparisons of gender and forests, with the main focus on developing countries in the tropics. It proposes a conceptual framework designed for looking at gender in forests (The Gender Box) and provides a better balance in gender studies between attention to what men do and what women do, along with growing attention to relations between them. It also highlights the ways gender intersects with other factors of social differentiation, such as age, ethnicity or socio-economic status, to shape forest dependent livelihoods. Three central issues that are increasingly recognized as important in thinking about international development and conservation – climate change, value chains for non-timber forest products, and tenure – are examined in detail from a gender perspective, and emerging issues in the field of gender and forestry are highlighted.”
