This paper was prepared to provide an overview of gender dimensions of the rice sector in the Greater Mekong region, specifically in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, as part of the Greater Mekong Rice Sector Development for Poverty Reduction program of the World Bank. It provides a brief introduction to gender dimensions in the global agricultural sector and its linkage to poverty reduction and nutrition; a comparative analysis of gender issues in rice production and post-harvest in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam – including information on the differences, if any, of gender aspects between less developed and more developed rice industries; and constraints faced in improving gender equality and women’s empowerment in the rice sector in these countries. Recommendations and practical implementation considerations including examples of best practices are included.
